Busy June,
Our daughter Yasmine, her husband Joaquin and children Shane and Olaya left yesterday having been with us for a month. Actually Shane stayed two weeks and then went on most boy’s dream holiday, a two week football/soccer camp at Real Madrid.
They arrived in time for the annual village festival of San Juan (Saint John). The market square becomes a fair ground, lots of vendors set up stalls, there is entertainment in the park, music and dancing in the main square until early hour of the morning. The festival starts with the statue of San Juan being carried on a float from the church through the village to the main square where his is left (guarded) by the castle gate. Many villagers get dressed up in fantasy medieval costumes and join the parade along with at least three bands. Cannon-fireworks are set off to frighten the Devil away for another year.

On the last day there is the pageant war between the Moors and the Christians. The Moors invade the beach, beat the Christians, and take control of the castle. Then the Christians return to the castle, and after a long discussion using an ancient script in prose, there is battle on horseback between two of the leaders and the Moor is killed, The other Moors say that with the help of San Juan they had visions overnight and are now Christians and everyone heads to the church to celebrate. Many hundreds of the villages dress up and participate. It is believed the pageant comes from the 1600’s when the coastal castles, such as in Carboneras, were very isolated and they had “war games” to practice for invasions and at the same time have a mid-year celebration.
Before Shane left for the camp he and Yasmine became certified scuba divers. Joaquin and I joined Yasmine and the instructor for an initial dive. I have wanted to do it for years and was thrilled to experience swimming nine meters underwater through rocky “canyons” full of different types of fish.
Olaya loves the jet skis so we went out for a ride.
Due to light winds we only managed one sail.
We only went out for two meals as the family prefers Francesca’s great Mediterranean cuisine, and she enjoys doing it
Joaquin is a fanatical off road cyclist. There are many trails in the surrounding hills. He persuaded me to go on 34 and 27Km rides with him. I borrowed a bike with an electric motor which helped on the steep hills. One route included part of the path left by a railroad built by a British mining company in the late 1800’s. The area had many iron and gold mines. Most were closed by the second world war but a gold mine continued until the 1960’s.
June 26 is another festival where most people build bonfires on the beach, cook food, party all night, and the town provides a firework display.
Yesterday our son Sean and his wife Katie arrived for a week. He is a bass guitarist and has already bumped into a Spanish classic guitarist and organized a “jam” session on the terrace this afternoon.

Nuestra hija Yasmine, su esposo Joaquín y los niños Shane y Olaya se fueron ayer después de haber estado con nosotros durante un mes. En realidad, Shane se quedó dos semanas y luego se fue a las vacaciones soñadas de la mayoría de los niños, un campamento de fútbol de dos semanas en el Real Madrid.

El último día tiene lugar la guerra de desfiles entre moros y cristianos. Los moros invaden la playa, golpean a los cristianos y toman el control del castillo. Entonces los cristianos regresan al castillo, y después de una larga discusión usando una escritura antigua en prosa, hay batalla a caballo entre dos de los líderes y el moro es asesinado, Los otros moros dicen que con la ayuda de San Juan tuvieron visiones de la noche a la mañana y ahora son cristianos y todos se dirigen a la iglesia para celebrar. Muchos cientos de aldeas se disfrazan y participan. Se cree que el desfile data de la década de 1600 cuando los castillos costeros, como el de Carboneras, estaban muy aislados y tenían “juegos de guerra” para practicar las invasiones y al mismo tiempo tener una celebración de medio año.
Antes de que Shane se fuera al campamento, él y Yasmine se convirtieron en buceadores certificados. Joaquín y yo nos unimos a Yasmine y al instructor para una inmersión inicial. Hacía años que quería hacerlo y estaba encantada de experimentar nadar nueve metros bajo el agua a través de “cañones” rocosos llenos de diferentes tipos de peces.
A Olaya le encantan las motos de agua así que salimos a dar una vuelta.
Debido a los vientos flojos solo logramos una vela.
Solo salimos para dos comidas ya que la familia prefiere la excelente cocina mediterránea de Francesca, y ella disfruta haciéndolo.
Joaquín es un ciclista todoterreno fanático. Hay muchos senderos en las colinas circundantes. Me convenció para que hiciera 34 y 27 kilómetros con él. Tomé prestada una bicicleta con un motor eléctrico que ayudó en las colinas empinadas. Una ruta incluía parte del camino dejado por un ferrocarril construido por una compañía minera británica a fines del siglo XIX. La zona tenía muchas minas de hierro y oro. La mayoría fueron cerradas por la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero una mina de oro continuó hasta la década de 1960.
El 26 de junio es otro festival en el que la mayoría de la gente hace fogatas en la playa, cocina, se divierte toda la noche y el pueblo ofrece un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales.
Ayer llegó nuestro hijo Sean y su esposa Katie por una semana. Es bajista y ya se ha cruzado con un guitarrista clásico español y esta tarde ha organizado una “jam” en la terraza.
