Last Friday, April 21st, I was invited by Abraham López Guerrero and Dra. Cristina Ruiz-Poveda Vera of the Madrid University of Technology Art and Design to attend a screening of the full 3.5 hour digital restored version of Lawrence of Arabia. (Sadly I am one of the few original crew members alive and active) The university was founded by Ignacio Pérez Dolset, Spain’s leading digital game and animated film director, as he needed film animators. Now there are 1500 students of which 700 do a 4 year animation course and most get employed when they graduate.
The university found that few of their students had seen films made before the year 2000 so plan a series of screenings of classic films of which Lawrence was the first. They had expected about 50 students and were happy that 150 reserved and more came at the last minute. They loved the film and reacted audibly throughout.
After the screening I was asked to talk about what animators could learn from David Lean’s directing, and answer questions for up to an hour. After 2.5 hours of great questions the facility had to close to the disappointment of the students. It is great interacting with enthusiastic students.
El pasado viernes 21 de abril fui invitado por Abraham López Guerrero y la Dra. Cristina Ruiz-Poveda Vera de la Universidad Tecnológica de Arte y Diseño de Madrid para asistir a una proyección de la versión restaurada digital completa de 3,5 horas de Lawrence de Arabia. (Lamentablemente, soy uno de los pocos miembros originales del equipo vivo y activo) La universidad fue fundada por Ignacio Pérez Dolset, el principal director de cine de animación y juegos digitales de España, ya que necesitaba animadores de cine. Ahora hay 1500 estudiantes de los cuales 700 hacen un curso de animación de 4 años y la mayoría consigue empleo cuando se gradúa.
La universidad descubrió que pocos de sus estudiantes habían visto películas realizadas antes del año 2000, así que planifique una serie de proyecciones de películas clásicas de las cuales Lawrence fue la primera. Habían esperado alrededor de 50 estudiantes y estaban felices de que 150 reservados y más llegaron en el último momento. Les encantó la película y reaccionaron de manera audible en todo momento.
Después de la proyección, me pidieron que hablara sobre lo que los animadores podrían aprender de la dirección de David Lean y que respondiera preguntas durante una hora. Después de 2,5 horas de grandes preguntas, la instalación tuvo que cerrar para decepción de los estudiantes. Es genial interactuar con estudiantes entusiastas.
